Review of ‘How an ape became a man: twenty million years of evolution (#1763) by Joseph McCabe
CITATION: McCabe, J. (1943) ‘How an ape became a man: twenty million years of evolution’ (Little Blue Book No. 1763) Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Publications (Self educator series #2).
Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer.
This is Joseph McCabe’s final effort to revitalise the Little Blue Book series with more than fifty titles for his friend who was the American publisher Emanuel Haldeman-Julius. The first ten titles (see below) are all science based, because McCabe sees science as organised common sense, sometimes badly portrayed in its literature.
This thirty-two page booklet is the second title in the Self educator series and is Joseph McCabe’s first venture into anthropology. These ten titles in the Self educator series are intended to make science clear to the working man which is a worthy aim. However, McCabe (as ever) sees this book as a chance to attack and disprove religious beliefs. He chose the Piltdown man as the main evidence for a 'Missing Link', which subsequent to his writing this book in 1943 was shown to be a fraud.
Many other discoveries have been made since McCabe was writing, that make the book irrelevant to current discussion. Overall this book is interesting but is now outdated in its content.
